You’re pregnant, and you’ve got the glow — that fabled, glorious glow you’ve read about on the pages of glossy magazines. But you’ve also noticed some dark splotches that were not there before baby was on board. And you feel like a teenager again with those new blemishes. Thank you, hormones.
The good news is there are simple steps you can take to help your skin look luminous during your pregnancy.
Step 1: Cleanse. When you are pregnant, increased hormone production may cause your skin to be oilier and shinier than usual. In some cases, you may start to see some acne. Don’t panic! A simple cleansing routine using fragrance-free soap in the morning and at night should help keep the oil in check. If you still notice more oil than you’d prefer, follow up with a natural astringent, such as witch hazel, then a light moisturizer.
Step 2: Exercise. Staying active during your pregnancy is critical for a variety of reasons, including better sleep, increased energy levels and relief of certain aches and pains. But did you know healthier skin is also on the list? Exercise increases the flow of blood to the skin, which can help it feel and look healthier. Stick with low-impact options recommended by your doctor, which may include swimming, walking or yoga.
Step 3: Keep makeup simple. When you have that pregnancy glow, you probably won’t need much makeup, which is a good thing, since the extra oil that shows up during pregnancy could be problematic when combined with makeup. To keep your face clean and gorgeous, make your cosmetic routine as easy and light as possible. Choose a foundation stick that can double as a concealer for any blemishes and moisturizing lipsticks or glosses that contain sunscreen. Swipe on some mascara, and you’re ready to roll.
Step 4: Moisturize with a purpose. During pregnancy, some women may notice dark spots on the cheeks and forehead. Formally known as chloasma or melasma, this “mask of pregnancy” is caused by increased pigmentation brought on by higher hormone levels. To reduce any hyper pigmentation in the skin, slather on sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher before you head outside.
